sorry for my absence in the blogosphere. i just said blogosphere. im sleepy. yawn.

i went to michigan this past weekend to see my LOVES. erise my ruv, autumnus, olicakes, and david big butt. (i do love me some nicknames, don't i?) in any case, it was an amazing trip and WAY TOO SHORT. i miss them so mucheeeee already! but we had loads of fun - eating delicious yumyums, opening wine bottles with absolute precision, watching elmo dance like a GRANGSTA - ya know, the usual hehehe.

anyway, olicakes has grown SO MUCH (make him stop!!!!!!!!!). and the night before i go to michigan, my mom goes out to buy him a buncha clothes and then comes home and repacks me a BIGGER suitcase for all his stuff hahaha. loveeee! and i basically wish this had been part of the things we packed cus WHAT. can we get this for him? how CUTE would olicakes look in this, PEOPLE. it's like a snuggie but full body, made of icelandic sheep wool. plus - every purchase of the baby sealpelt (there are adult ones too btw ahem) from now til march 2012, goes towards supporting the family of sigrún lára kjartansdótti, a little baby fighting an aggressive and rare form of cancer. good product, good cause!

i never use my calendars or agendas to write down plans. i'll start using it when it's new and then slowly but surely, the notes on there become few and far between. in high school, it was the same with writing down homework (though i'd somehow still remember to do it all and get it all done for the most part). even so, i always remember my plans for any given day. it's also the reason i'm social media queen. i can multitask to the nth degree.

even though i'm bad at writing down plans i DO love this clock by design duo black + blum. and if i ever have a work-from-home office (ideally, i'll be working from home cus i have my own bi'ness), i want this right by my desk so i can put my plans on there. and doodle. lots of doodling.

yesterday i decided i wanted to make 만두국 (mandoo guk) with the 만두 (mandoo) that unnz & her family made. i didn't really have all of the right ingredients but it still turned out delicious if i do say so myself. i loveee to cook and now that mama & baba are on vacay, i have the kitchen to myself (and my mom's self hahaha). so we get to cook yummies all the time. i love it!

i wish there was a full set of these plates by dan golden. the two plates and tray here are part of a collection he designed for cb2 (related to crate&barrel). i WANT. but seriously i want like.... 6-8 different versions of this plate for my future house. it'd be fun to do bowls as well and come up with ways to represent things like soup or ice cream sundae.

apparently theres a new napoleon dynamite cartoon coming out or already out or something. i saw a commercial for it the other day and it made me think of bebrinn. her and i watched napoleon dynamite during one of our chill-at-home, be-lazy days and cracked up at every scene. and by cracked up, i mean howled like wolves.

been holding off on sharing this piece til i could relevantly fit it into an entry but what's better than napoleon dynamite to relate to this cool paper 'sculpture' by karin soderquist? love that one side of the horse is skeletal.

it's january but the weather still hasn't made up its mind which season it wants to be. rainy in the high 50s one day, sunny and 28 the next, snowing and 30 another day. i don't even know what i'm supposed to be wearing half the time w/ the weather all crazy like this!

this year is jam-packed w/ weddings. back to back to back! i literally have FOUR weddings to go to starting in july and ending sometime in the winter. and they're ALL not-in-maryland. the first two are in cali (congrats taemo oppz & michelle, sammie & d-unit <3). the third is in mexico (congrats to farisa joonam & sal <3). and last but not least, korea (congrats to ed oppz & kylie <3). so yeah, weddings everywhere! no one else is allowed to get married in 2012 though, OK?! hahaha

i've been dying to get another tattoo(s) for awhile now. i know i want to expand on the one i already have. and i already know exactly how i want to do that... well for the most part anyway. and then i have one other that i know i definitely want. theres a third thats swimming around in my head but it hasn't taken shape yet so i'm gonna let that one simmer.

in any case, i won't ever have as many tattoos as the tattooed lady up there. i LOVE love love loveeee the idea of vintage 20s/30s circuses. although i suppose this series by rudy-jan faber may be more freakshow than circus. or mayhaps both?

i always hated US history. once i got to college and could pick what kinds of classes i wanted to take, i ended up taking mostly east asian (predominantly korean) history classes. and a few asian american studies classes that relied heavily on asian american history. and if i could've, i would've double-major'ed in korean studies but umcp doesn't offer it. le sigh.

anyway, these posters by jenny burrows & matt kappler almost make me wanna go to a history class hahaha. uhm... awesome. my favourite is the genghis khan one cus for all i know, i am related to him (silk trade route baby). the originals had an actual museum name/logo at the bottom, but they had to change that when the posters went viral.

ok so i haven't blogged in a REALLY long time. working retail + holiday season = walking zombie sahar. soOo! sorry bout that devoted readers! but now that the holiday season is over (for the most part) and it's the NEW YEAR, i'm here with a new entry - finally.

spent new year's eve at my big brutha howie's house. me and jen unnz picked up butterscotch vodka, apple juice, and vodka-infused whipped cream. oh the alcoholic butterbeer-ness of it all. hahaha but seriously it was delicious. idea totally stolen from shaundawg.

just had a FEAST at cuba de ayer with ita-ita. which reminds me, i must write a yelp review on them. ita-ita and i go there on catch-up-dates every few weeks/months and get the same things: yuca frita, ropa vieja, masitas de puerco, flan, tres leches, cafe con leche. ALWAYS. today we did mojitos but when we don't do that, i do jupina. m'mm.

anyway i'm stuffed and i just wanna sit around like a blob and crochet some scarves. i'm getting really nervous that i won't finish them in time for xmas. cus its TWO WEEKS AWAY (WHAAAT). so this entry is gonna be short, sweet, and wondrous. like tres leches.

a couple wks ago (i think? my sense of time has gone OUT the window ever since thanksgiving!) i got flu-like sick kinda. my entire body ached so bad, even my skin was aching! and i had the chills and my throat was scratchy and i was feeling SO cruddy. no energy at ALL. it only lasted for one night but THEN i lost my voice. and i mean lost as in literally inaudible. people couldn't hear me on the phone and i spent an entire day not speaking at all. and then i'm pretty sure yimbo got the same thing (sorry chingoo) cus we met up right before he went to korea and we had the exact same voice *croak*

i'm better now but i bet if i had something as cute as these giant microbes plushies, i wouldn't have felt so bad about my cold. or. i would've punched the hell outta the plushie as payback (well, it makes sense in my head).

woke up to sunshine and brisk-cold air on dec 1st. it was feeling wintry, with temperatures barely climbing to 50. and thats the way i like it. i opened my window a bit even though it was so cold. i tend to do that - especially in the car. i'll be bundled up in scarves and gloves and a winter coat with the heat on and the window cracked open. i don't know why that is, though.

days like that make me want to take a trip to the beach. which is also weird, i know. but i LOVE the beach at winter-time. it's cold. the ocean's not actually freezing because it's still warm from summer. salty wind. sweaters and snow and sand. it's been years since i've gone to the beach in cold weather and i miss it.

since i'm feeling beachy keen (harharhar) i figured i'd do a 6picks on the beach and ocean that feel sorta cold and icy. even if it is a randomly warm december night tonight.

DYING to see the muppets. heard from lots of ppl that it was awesome. ~~and even though gonzo is scary to some people,~~ i always thought the muppets were quite cute. and in case you didn't know, muppet-creator jim henson is a former terp AND created a lot of the characters on sesame street. and sesame street taught me how to speak english. the many reasons i love jim henson.

designer/artist timm schneider has a street art project in which he takes repurposed ping pong balls and/or styrofoam balls and turns everyday objects into googly-eyed muppet-look-alikes. LOVE.

its THANKSGIVING. been talking about how much i can't wait for thanksgiving since LAST december (no joke). i love this holiday. and i have SO VERY MUCH to be thankful for. i'm thankful and grateful to ME for being strong and finding my true inner strength. i'm thankful for the family and friends-who-are-family who have been there for me the past 3 years (and always)... you are the reason i could find the strength that i had and i love you all so much i can't even put it into words. <3

its a beautiful day out. our turkey is wearing his fancy bacon suit (hehe). the food is almost all ready. and i get to spend this day and weekend w/ some of the ppl i love most. and to those who are far away, we're together in spirit!!! now eat some TURKEY!

sorry for the no blog entry yesterday. i'm sick, randomly. on tuesday, i was working 1-930 and around 7 i started feeling SUPER crappy. all of a sudden, too. sore throat, entire body was aching (even my skin), fever, chills. i went home and did the neti pot, ate 신라면 (shin ramyun), drank 보리차 (bori cha), and took nyquil. woke up yesterday with a sore-ish throat but mostly felt better otherwise. and this morning, only the right side of my throat hurts(?!) so i'm trying to rest up. laying in bed w/ my crochet needle and some yarn. working on my fourth scarf! which reminds me, i need to go to joanne fabrics and pick up another roll of yarn for this one scarf i'm making. it's really wide and its for richie rich who has the longest torso ever so i wanna make sure its the right length. hahaha.

natalia gomensoro is the brains behind metalnat, a jewelry brand she came up with because she couldn't find any jewelry she'd like to wear herself. drawing on her design and architecture background, she applies a latin american silversmithing technique to her work, which comes off very industrial.

if i got this ring (WHICH I WANT), i'd probably set it to some very different four letter words. i mean, you know me. but besides various curse words, i'd probably also wanna set it to "rawr" and "weeh" and silly things like that too. this ring is so versatile!

i just finished watching last night on netflix. one of my favourite actresses, keira knightley, stars in it. and it was the kind of film i was in the mood to watch today. slice of life. sort of quietly heartbreaking. the music was a perfect match to this mood, too. and crazily enough, i just found out that the director, producer, and writer of the film is a iranian-american.

this artwork by stella im hultberg sort of fits the tone of the movie i just watched. a little... sad. a little hopeful. the eyes say a lot.

as you know, i've ALREADY shared some of the episodes of alexei alexeev's short animations. formerly titled "kjfg," the mini-sodes are now known as "log jam." i stumbled upon a new episode and then realized there were a few new ones! my favourite is probably the duck one out of these. can we get this on a DVD box set (not kidding) so i can watch them all the time?!

wondering about the name change? in an interview, alexeev stated that he came up with the title "kjfg" out of thin air so as to avoid any preconceived notions about the animated shorts. but after a couple companies with the same name contacted him, he decided on "log jam" with help from nickelodeon UK producer peter drake. either way, the mystery of kjfg was fun and log jam is fitting!

DO as much as i would've liked this year. didn't go clubbing (snowed saturday) or really dress up (only looked like a creepy doll at work). and i'm not sure we'll be going to georgetown tonight after all :( but if NOT then i DO want to have a movie marathon tonight: hocus pocus, little monsters, nightmare before christmas (usually a xmas movie for me but still), etc.etc. me and richie rich already watched the first resident evil at ANdy's on friday night. aka one of my favourite zombie movies - OF ALL TIME. ahem.

i still don't actually HAVE my halloween costume ready for this saturday. i know what i want to be (it's a ssssssecret though!) but i haven't gotten the actual outfit part yet. i'm thinking of going to the gym early in the morning tmrw and then popping over to pollysue's vintage in takoma park before work (if i can GO TO SLEEP at a normal time tonight, that is). if not tomorrow, then thursday definitely. other than that, the only place i can think of that would have what i'd need is american apparel and i am not trying to spend the money that it'd cost there.

the weather has been getting chilly lately, which i absolutely love. fall and winter are my favourite seasons! (why do i always wanna say "favourite holidays" when thats not what they are?) i was in ny this past weekend and the weather was absolutely perfect. sunny. barely 60 degrees. 45 at night. brrr. i got to wear my tall leather and suede boots. and various other fall fashions that i love. oh, autumn, how i love thee. (this goes for this autumn too.)

i can feel the winter when i watch this opening sequence to a video game prototype that hyein lee is working on. I WANT TO PLAY THIS GAME. like... REALLY WANT TO PLAY IT. in any case, gotta love her style - its very.... cute, but w/ this edginess to it. the video above, and even some of her sketches, are kind of like reality slapping you in the face. juxtaposition between the cute illustration style vs. the subject matter. i like!

can you believe it's already october 17th?! cus i canNOT believe that. time is flyyyyying. but it's good. this year, for all of its very lows and very highs, is moving along at a rapid pace that i kind of like. i feel like 2009 and 2010 were just sooooo sloooooow. in any case, i have like....... 2 wks to make my halloween costume. and btw... WHAT ARE WE DOING OCT 29TH?! so YEAH. i need to find something fun to do.

it was hard to title this post because two different designers came up w/ very similar ideas. but, since i loved the idea - and it certainly pays homage to the visionary steve jobs - i thought i'd post it this way. the above illustration was designed by jonathan mak, a hong-kong based illustrator. the below by chris thornley.

as a designer myself, i could understand this being a total coincidence. it's actually not unheard of that such a thing would happen w/ no plagiarism intended. washington post blogger michael cavna even admitted that its happened to him countless times in this blog entry about the images.

either way. its a tribute. and i like it.

me and jen unnz went to 찜질방 (jjim jil bang) today. and we legit spent freakin 5 hours there. it was awesome. i think i washed my hair a total of 10 times while i was there hahaha. and we got our skin scrubbed all fresh and clean. and sweated in the sauna. and ate dericious food. and drank shikhye. now that there's a jjim jil only 25 min from my house, we pretty much decided it needs to be a monthly trip. i also decided we should somehow build a bathhouse in the basement hahaha i wish.

in case you arent aware, or don't live in the DC metropolitan area, we have been going through natural disaster after natural disaster over here. started with the earthquake (5.8), centered in VA. of course, the californians wanted to act like this was the tiniest little earthquake on the planet and we were overreacting. uhm. yeah, overreacting to something we're not used to. like when californians get an inch of snow and freak out. yes. like that.

then we were hit with hurricane ~~old lady~~ irene. my smart idea was to take a bus up to NYC that friday afternoon - you know, when the hurricane was supposed to hit the mid-atlantic and northeast saturday/sunday. smart. i stayed out all friday night and played, before heading down to MD on the 6:30am bus. failed trip, but fun nonetheless! we all survived the hurricane and i somehow didn't even lose power (thank you, BGE in columbia).

but then, alas. a two week long thunderstorm in the form of tropical storm lee. such severe flooding in our area that historic ellicott city was knee deep in water. and my closet was flooding ~~wtf~~ yay. again, during all of this, me and jen unnz and richie rich decided to go for a leisurely drive down to college park. we crajee.

i know i know, i keeeeeeep blogging about disney princesses. but i cant help it when there are so many GREAT (re)interpretations of them. and LA-based illustrator claire hummel really studied up on what these ladies would be wearing had the disney movies been going for historical accuracy (fyi, they obviously werent hahaha). what a fun concept!

my favourite reinterpretations are belle (above), pocahontas (below). belle's look is SO very french aristocracy circa the late 1700s. and pocahontas seriously just looks FIERCE!

slight peeve for me was jasmine's look. hummel tuned into persian art so i obviously love that since i'm iranian. howeverrrr, this doesn't FULLY work, since princess jasmine is supposed to be arabian and persians are NOT arabs (common mistake but still). but whatever, i do like her jacket. im also a bit sad about the little mermaid but theres no helping that one, as she wasnt really... a human. so there wouldn't have been a good way to depict her fashion in a historical sense except when she was in human form. i do wish, however, that we could see mulan, anastasia, and the newest disney princess tiana (from the princess & the frog) in this series too! and, of course, everyone would like to see the disney villains ^^b

i remember watching winnie the pooh all the time as a kid. and i especially remember watching him shovel honey into his mouth like it aint nothin' but a thang. and being jealous and wanting to do the same. but honey in real life wasn't mango-yellow and tidy. honey in real life is a sticky, messy, amber-brown, viscous mess... albeit a delicious mess. so i never got to recreate a winnie the pooh + honey moment.

instead i'll stare at this hive honey set by biodidactic designs. i LOVE the clear glass, though it also comes in frosted. very simple, clean, and geometric. on my wishlist for my future-future-faraway-someday home.

the last couple days have been very odd weather-wise. super blindingly sunny one minute and then pouring down buckets and buckets of rain the next. right now, looking out of my window, i see blue sky on one side and menacing clouds on the other. oh the joys of living in maryland.

this entire piece is 100% hand-embroidered by embroidery artist waterrose. she has started experimenting with more 3D pieces and OMG is this not amazing?! the face has so much dimension (as does the whole piece). and the style is very reminiscent of scientific drawings in the early 1900s. very cool! again, if i had my own home (somedayyyy), i would love to have something like this to hang in the hallway. its just so different.

super delay on the blogging. its not AUGUST and i haven't blogged since july. at least it was the last day of july, though, yeah? in any case, i'm back. back again. sa-har's back. tell a friend. i was in california until the 7th and i've been SO jetlagged that all i could manage was to work and eat for the past week. but fear not, blogging will be had!!

i am in LOVE with this magnet&wood-base vase by perhacs studio (haha inadvertent rhyme). for someone who likes to change up aesthetics as often as possible (have you seen my hair?), this is perfection. not only would i be able to change up the flowers/plants in each vase, but i'd also be able to change up the positioning of the ~~vials~~ vases. the possibilities are endless!!

and, hey, i could even use them as shot glasses. ok maybe not. but in college, someone DID have a set of vials that we used for jägerbombs once. yeah. it happened.

i'm staying at a hotel in half moon bay, ca right now. a block or two from the ocean, too! but it's super fogtastic and chilly here. nothing like the 120 degree weather back home in maryland. in any case, i love being near the ocean so i have no complaints. in fact, as soon as i post this blog, i'm off to purchase a juiced greens "smoothie" (sounds delightful, i know - its actually not bad!) and head to the beach w/ my sketchbook. and a hoodie.

i hope by now everyone knows how much i absolutely LOVE pirates of the caribbean. my car (which i've had since 2003, the same year the first potc movie came out) is named "black pearl" after jack sparrow's ship. what can i say? i must've been a pirate in another life ~_^ and since i'm so close to the ocean these days, all i can think to say is: drink up me hearties yo-ho.

this blog entry is gonna be about tigers, as i move through the rest of the chinese zodiac 6 picks. BUT can i just say, i'm pretty excited to buy the newest mac osx --> lion! as you may know (or may have guessed), im a huge apple nerd (excluding the iphone cus i love my samsung galaxy s). and the new multi-touch gestures is something i can't wait to use - especially since i literally always have 1000 tabs open at the same time. it'll be nice to be able to just ~~swype~~ swipe my fingers and move through tabs instead of trying to find the one i'm looking for on the tab bar.

i'm definitely more of a sea horse than horse-horse type of girl. it's probably got something to do with my affinity ~~obsession~~ with the ocean. i find it fascinating and fluid and...floaty. gravity confuses me sometimes - which might describe why i always run into and trip over things? in any case, the only time i've ever been near a REAL horse up close was years&years ago (4th grade), when i went to a family reunion in georgia. we went horseback riding and it was just not my thing.

well, i'm not sure if i ever blogged about this but i FINALLY watched the 4th pirates of the caribbean w/ jasong and, despite popular opinion, i found it to be fun. i suppose most people that weren't feeling it disliked the absence of will turner and elizabeth swan. but as a huge pirates of the caribbean dork (and jack sparrow fan) i found it to be quite fun! i'll even venture to say it was better than the 2nd and 3rd, though definitely not better than the 1st.

derek eads has such a fun aesthetic. his work is amusing and unassuming -- for some reason the word "stoic" comes to mind. i had seen his bill murray illustrations (below) before but - of course - i squealed like a little girl when i saw the johnny depp illustration above. simply titled "depps" the piece illustrates johnny depp as his various roles throughout the years. of course the edward scissorhands, jack sparrow, and mad hatter stood out to me right from the start, but it was fun for me to go through the rest of them as well since i'm such a johnny depp fan (have almost all of his movies on dvd).
